Plan

THE RUF VISION

Foundations

Reformed University Fellowship brings to the campus a heart for God, a love for the campus and convictions that are well formed, deeply held and which allow it to bring a fully-orbed ministry to students. The ministry of RUF is grounded on the foundation of the authority of scripture, the necessity of new life in Jesus Christ, and the central task of the church as the “gathering and perfecting of the saints.”

Philosophy

RUF has developed a ministry which is biblically informed and pastorally sensitive. It is consistent with the God-given role of the Church on campus to reach and equip students to love and serve Jesus Christ and his church. RUF is especially dedicated to helping students grow in grace, evangelism and missions, fellowship and service, and a biblical world and life view.

Distinctives

RUF is set apart from other campus ministries by its commitment to the visible church, to in-depth Bible study, to the student’s vocation, to emphasizing being over doing, and to challenging students to avoid pat answers in favor of thoughtful questions and sound responses based on critical thinking, proper interpretation of Scripture, and holistic application of Biblical truth.

THE CHURCH & CAMPUS CENTERED STRATEGY

A strategic partnership within the PCA

Peter is the first ordained campus minister to go out under a new affiliation agreement between Mission to the World (MTW) and Reformed University Fellowship (RUF), the mission agency and the campus ministry of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). This partnership represents an understanding of the strategic necessity of campus ministry in supporting covenant children through college, reaching a new generation of college students with the gospel, and planting both populations in the church for a lifetime of ministry.

A strategic partnership with the Mexican Church

Since 1992, the PCA has partnered with the National Presbyterian Church of Mexico (NPCM), and the team worships at one of this denomination’s churches situated just to the north of the UNAM. With a congregation of about 200, Iglesia Presbiteriana Berith (Covenant Presbyterian Church) has a university professor pastor, a professional congregation, and a growing heart for the students in its midst and down the street. Peter and the team’s job is to pastor university students from all of the Presbyterian churches both at the church and on the campus, while he works to implement RUF’s “fixed theology, flexible methodology” approach.

A trained and ordained man

Reformed University Fellowship believes in sending seminary trained, ordained men to serve students as they face crucial questions of identity, calling and companionship in the bustling marketplace of ideas. As an ordained minister in the PCA, Peter is putting his training and language skills to work in pastoring students in Mexico City. In September of 2007, Peter became a career missionary with MTW, and is now seeking to raise the additional funds needed to continue to serve his call as the UNAM campus minister until the work is firmly established.

A paired church planting and campus ministry plan

The goal of beginning an RUF at the UNAM is that it may eventually be connected more tightly with a new church plant. And like the emerging model of pairing church plants and campus ministries in the US, our goal is to start paired works located close to each of the major universities in the city. The future of Mexico City and Mexico is moving through the hearts and halls of Mexico City’s universities, and campus ministry is a strategic necessity for the future leaders and members of the church of Jesus as well.
